As has happened to many, I came to this country where I had to face a completely different environment from the one I was always used to and I was primarily concerned about what my children's education would be like and what I had to do as a mother, in order to help them. I tried to get involved in school activities and that's when I was invited to participate in a program called FACES, which helped me a lot because it tries to inform and empower parents on topics like: knowledge of the ins and outs of the U.S. education system, graduation requirements, exams, who to ask for help at school , and in general, how to better help our children in these important aspects of their lives.
I could see from the first meeting of the program that this information would help me to face the education of my children, not only for the present but also for the future, and the best, in my own language, because I was new to my native Republic, Dominican Republic, and I knew nothing about English. Thanks to FACES I was able to learn that there were key people at the school who could help me in my process of adapting to this new system, also that I could help my children go to college and all that this entails for the future of the family.
I wholeheartedly tell you that I thank the program for all that information, because it really made me feel empowered. That is why I invite all, fathers and mothers, not to miss the opportunity to participate in an upcoming delivery of FACES, so that, like me, they are informed and able to fulfill that dream, which I believe all parents share: That our children succeed in successfully beating teaching levels from kindergarten through 12th grade and then being able to enter the University so they can have a better future.”
